This comedy drama recounts the fictional adventures of Monsieur Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.  Gustave was the hotel's primary attraction, a vision of purple-clad slickness attending the guests with oily efficiency and bedding the dowagers. When one dowager (Tilda Swinton) dies, leaving Gustave a priceless painting, the family revolts, and a frenetic caper is set in motion involving art theft, murder, love, prison breaks, steam trains, cable cars, occupying armies, dead cats, a clandestine order of fraternal concierges and elaborate cakes, in boxes.

Tim Robey in The Telegraph says in his 5 star review "It’s a wonderful film with a very funny performance from Ralph Fiennes. You could get light-headed on the pure fun of it, which unleashes fresh waves of fun-within-fun at every point where you worry it might dry up."

Mark Kermode in The Guardian says "This artfully precise comedy is full of rapier-sharp wit, and Ralph Fiennes's timing is note-perfect."
